5 Things you don't know about beauty counters

I started Blushup through my own personal problem: I had just moved back to NYC and wanted to book a makeup appointment for a party I had that night. Sephora and MAC were fully booked and I wished there was an app where I can view all the available beauty counters and easily book online. At that point 80% of store beauty counters were offline and through a lot of customer interviews I learned that many women were facing the same problem. Me and many women were also tired of how crowded Sephora is. It’s impossible to get an appointment on the same week or day. There are approximately 50,000 beauty counters in the U.S. and no single online platform connecting them to people. Blushup is the 1st.

1. You must book an appointment

If you want to get a full makeover you must book an appointment in advance for best results. Why? Because if you just walk by a store, sometimes there are no professional makeup artists available and you might get a store associate who are not professional MUAs. When you walk by a counter you’ll probably end up getting a quick demo instead of a real makeup application. These brands have great makeup artists available if you book in advance. You might even get one of their celebrity makeup artists who participate in runaway shows, fashion week etc.. they always do an amazing job on me! Blushup accepts same day booking but you must book at least 3 hours in advance.

2.Cross brand makeovers are not only at Sephora

I always get asked if stores such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Barneys can use multi brands for makeovers. The answer is Yes! Macy’s has a whole section with millennial brands such as Anastasia Beverly Hills, Bare Minerals, Urban Decay and more where the makeup artist uses all brands. Barney’s, Blue Mercury and Space NK also offer multi- brand makeovers. The more traditional department stores sometimes have this option available, you just have to ask and negotiate with them.

3. It’s the most affordable

If you don’t want to spend much money getting a makeover but you still care about high quality, this is the best option. Some brands only require a one product purchase (we display prices on our platform). Sephora charges a $50 fee, and the average makeup application price at hair salons are $75 without product purchases. You can spend as little as $20 at some stores and leave with a mascara or lipstick.

4.Service is free, you pay with product purchases

If you need new beauty products, why not take advantage of the free makeup services these brands offer? I plan my product purchases around days where I have special events to go to. Whether it’s a business meeting, dinner, datenight, or a wedding I always take advantage of getting a free makeover when I need to buy new products. So be strategic and plan your product purchases for those days you want to look fabulous.

5.Brands offer complimentary facials

Facials also work like makeovers. They are free with product purchases by top beauty brands. Some of the top rated facials at the moment are by La Mer and 111Skin (their Cryo facials are the best!). They require a 1 product purchase, which is expensive but at least you get to take a product home and the facial ends up being free. Better than paying the same fee at a spa and not getting any products with it. The brands will often give you free samples to take home and they have private spa rooms in the back of every store. I will write about my La Mer facial experience on the next blog!
